Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

This recipe uses ingredients already found in the cabinets. One less one-purpose-only product to have to buy. Plus, the cost per load is only $0.03! Enjoy!

1 cup salt
2 cups baking soda
2 cups borax

1. Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container
2. Use 1 tbsp. in each compartment and wash normally
*If you have problems with hard water, increase the amount of detergent and add vinegar to the rinse compartment.

  3. I have used this before, and loved it! My husband was a little suspicious, but he could see its results, and was on board when he realized it meant no more dishwash detergent to buy. Thanks for sharing:)

  4. Hi, Whitney! I have also been using homemade dishwasher detergent. The only thing I found is that it turned some of my silverware a grayish color. Did this ever happen to you? I had so many complaints that the homemade detergent wasn't cleaning from my family that I broke down and bought a small box of the stuff I had been using previously. I haven't found that the store bought cleans any better except in the case of no gray silverware and a bit better shine. Have you had any experience with these problems?

    1. Oh dear. I haven't had any issue with silverware turning. Are you referring to a film or other residue building up on them? That's the only issue I've begun to have with mine, and I believe that may have something to do with the quality of the water (ie having hard water). My plan is to add a bit of citric acid to my next batch and see if that helps. I believe the ratio is 1:1 salt and citric acid. I'll probably play around with it some to see if I can use less to cut cost. I don't know if that will eliminate the grayish coloration in your situation, but perhaps give it a try. :)
