Tennyson's Birth Story

We unexpectedly welcomed the arrival of our son seven weeks early! It was only about twelve hours from the first contraction to delivery. The previous night I had had contractions which prompted me to get up about every hour and walk a bit. Once I did, they seemed to dissipate. The next day I felt a few here and there but thought nothing much of it. In fact, David and I thought they were just Braxton Hicks contractions since there was no pattern and this was the time in which they were expected to occur. We enjoyed dinner with friends that evening. A few times the contractions would hit strong enough that I would have to pause and breathe through them. Still, we weren't alarmed (in retrospect we were in denial that it could be actual labor). I continued to work through the contractions which did increase in strength and frequency but still did not occur in any pattern. Some would be five minutes a part and others would be right on top of each other. Finally, at about three o'clock in the morning we still weren't convinced of being in active labor but decided to call our midwife. David described the situation while I rather vocally worked through contractions. Upon hearing me in the background, she instructed us to immediately go to the hospital.

I paced in a circle around the kitchen island while David very quickly tossed a bag together. It was such a rush that we later discovered that our toiletries bags were packed, but not the toiletries. haha. David certainly gets the "most focused driver award" for having driven an hour in the early morning hour with little rest, snow falling, and a screaming wife in the passenger seat. (I never thought I'd be a "screamer," but with the labor occurring so hard and so fast it was all I could do.) Once we arrived, things moved even faster.

Soon, every nurse on the labor and delivery floor seemed to be in my room. I was only 33 weeks along in the pregnancy after all. They tried multiple medications to try to stop labor. At first they were successful in at least slowing it down, but it didn't last long. Contractions soon picked up once more. Upon checking, it was determined that I had already dilated to 6cm and his little tushy could be felt making it's exit. He was breech and in a hurry to arrive. The call was then made for an emergency c-section. I'll never forget the look on David's face at that moment. If I wasn't so exhausted and in pain I would probably have felt the same.

The c-section was very fast. Within minutes, "It's a boy!" was announced and we heard quite the strong cry. It was such a sweet sound. We weren't expecting to hear much of anything considering that he was seven weeks premature and labor progressed too fast for the steroid shots to be given to quicken his lung development. The nurse allowed David to hold him and then presented him to me. In that moment the sensations of the surgery disappeared and I lavished in that moment with my son. He was then rushed to the NICU and David escorted back to the OB room.

The doctor discovered during the surgery that I have a septate uterus (arcuate style from what I understand). The top portion is thicker than normal which creates a heart-shape interior. Thus, the baby resisted in one side and the placenta was bunched together in the other side. Due to the abnormal internal space, the baby could not turn out of a breech position. He also simply ran out of space and therefore labor was initiated. My pattern-less and rapid labor was also due to the abnormal womb shape. As it is, the uterus cannot effectively contract and the cervix dilate.

We later spoke with the doctor, and she reassured us that we could have additional children in the future. She didn't see that we would be limited in having children. Those pregnancies, however, will always be a breech presentation, c-section delivery, and premature baby. The next one may even be able to go past the 33 week mark. Each pregnancy is different even in normal conditions.

As I look back upon his birth experience, I can't help but see God's hand in multiple places. Tennyson has behaved beyond the expectations for his age. He should have needed lots of respiratory support especially after not having the steroid shots prior to birth, but he didn't. He should have had a bit of a struggle to learn to nurse, but has been doing well since day two. He shouldn't be where he is now, but he is. I frequently forget that Tennyson is only a 3lb 11oz. preemie, not a full-term newborn. It's interesting how I struggled daily with so much digestion issues during pregnancy that my weight gain was always less than the recommendation. Yet, had I gained more weight he would've been a bigger baby that ran out of space even sooner. God was with us at all moments in the pregnancy and delivery. Neither one of us would have made it had it not been for the c-section. Some times having a plan broken is the best blessing there could be. God has also been at work in placing such dear friends and family members in our lives. We've been so grateful for all the offers to pick up items we'll need like preemie clothing, preemie diapers, a crib etc., in addition to competing tasks like cleaning our home and painting a dresser.  We had anticipated an additional seven weeks to finish preparing for his arrival, and so weren't quite ready. God has really provided for us.

I look at his little being and fall more in love with him each time. He's simply incredible. I'm so grateful to God for blessing us with little Tennyson.  I love seeing how amazing David is as a father. Tiny Tennyson is such  joy in our lives. We do our best to stay with him in the NICU as much as possible. It makes for long and difficult days, but we're together as a family. We're eager to bring him home with us soon. How I can't wait to have life with this little guy!

Pregnancy Update: Week 32

This baby deep inside of me, ever so small, is a child of God. A child that God gave to me to take care of whether for a day or for years. That care began at conception. Whether he or she lives or dies each day I am with him or her is a gift and has a purpose with eternal consequences. My baby is now a part of my life, my testimony. -Brenda Rodgers, "New Rules for Announcing a Pregnancy"

How far along: 32 weeks!

"
In these past few weeks, it's all about practice, practice, practice as she hones the skills she'll need to thrive outside the womb — from swallowing and breathing to kicking and sucking. And speaking of sucking, your little one has been able to suck her thumb for a while now. Something else to note: As more and more fat accumulates under your baby's skin, she's becoming less transparent and more opaque.-What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition

We did get to see him/her practicing breathing during our last ultrasound. It was amazing to just watch his/her little chest work those lungs and muscles in preparation for breathing on the outside soon!

Baby size:  "tipping the scales at almost four pounds and topping out at just about 19 inches.-What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition

*Update 1/9/14: Our little one is little indeed.  He/she isn't quite as big as the book suggests. According to the ultrasound today, he/she is about 3 pounds 7 ounces. He/she is continuing to grow, but at his/her own rate. Otherwise, he/she is doing really well! We're following the growth closely. Hopefully Prayerfully, his/her size is just a matter of him/her being small and nothing else. We're still optimistic :)

Gender: We'll find out when he/she arrives in March!

Belly: I love this little big baby belly!  It and the baby are rapidly growing! During the ultrasound last week the doctor commented on the odd positions the baby can get into. It is pretty funny looking when he/she moves entirely to one side or assumes what I call the "dumb bell" position. There's not much room in there, and so his/her position is quite evident.

Sleep: Sleep is ... well, it is what it is. I'm so thankful for the ability to rest or nap during the day! So thankful.

Clothes
This baby and belly are growing fast! Maternity clothes are a necessity. Now that my coat doesn't quite close, I've deemed a puffy vest I recently purchased as one of my favorites. It gives me that coverage needed without buying an entire new coat. Plus, it's really cute with tops and makes them look more like a completed outfit. haha.

Movement: Exercising got dropped in the busyness of recent life. I'm getting back into incorporating the exercises and nutrition back into my days though. It does feel good to get back to my normal activities and foods. I still need to add more walking. I rather miss getting to walk outside, but with temperatures as low as they are I'll find another location. Haha

Baby Movement- This little one has yet to slow down in movements. He/she can just keep right on kicking and flipping as much as he/she wants! It's one part sweetness and a larger part reassurance. I really enjoy feeling his/her presence :)

Food aversions: I generally try to avoid things I know will pose digestion problems. It's really hit or miss. Sometimes those things are fine and other times they're not.

Food cravings:  I still have a immense love for citrus. A day without a grapefruit or something just wouldn't be complete. I suppose there are worse things to "crave" during pregnancy! At least citrus is a good source of vitamin C for the winter time! I could probably also add milk to the list. I didn't really drink milk before pregnancy, and now I can take out a gallon pretty fast. I don't know what it is about it, but I love it. When we visited family recently, I made sure to have plenty citrus and milk available. Haha.

What I'm excited about:
First and foremost, I'm excited we're still doing well and progressing towards full term! Each week is a gain. Only 8 more! :)

I'm so very grateful for our midwife team and chosen hospital. After experiencing a vastly different approach to maternity care recently, I'm even all the more grateful for our team & hospital here. I couldn't wait to get back home to them! They really have been amazing. I can't praise them enough for how excellent their continued care and response has been.

My need to have things prepared is in overdrive. Once we returned home from our trip, I was pretty eager to begin purchasing items we will need. We visited a local consignment store that was having a 75% off sale- yay! So, hubby picked out several boy outfits and I picked out several girl outfits. At those prices we can easily have a selection for either a boy or a girl available, and what we don't use now we can use later. We also found a Infantino carrier, which may be nice to have. The carseat arrived yesterday. A set of bottles should arrive soon. A cloth diaper and supplies order will be next. (Clearly, I'm a big fan of Amazon! My entire registry is on there. haha). It's a relief to me to start getting the essentials. I'm also grateful for all the lovely gifts that have been given by friends and family!

Pregnancy Update: 30 Weeks

This baby deep inside of me, ever so small, is a child of God. A child that God gave to me to take care of whether for a day or for years. That care began at conception. Whether he or she lives or dies each day I am with him or her is a gift and has a purpose with eternal consequences. My baby is now a part of my life, my testimony. -Brenda Rodgers, "New Rules for Announcing a Pregnancy"

How far along: 30 weeks!

"
growing daily is his brain, which is actually starting to look like the real thing with those characteristic grooves and wrinkles. And now that your little genius can regulate his own body temperature and turn up the heat, he'll start shedding lanugo, the downy body hair that's been keeping him warm up until now.-What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition

Baby size:  "... weighing in at over three pounds now (he’ll be packing on the weight at a rate of half a pound per week for the next seven weeks). .-What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition

Gender: We'll find out when he/she arrives in March!

As I was walking into a building one day, a random lady stopped me to chat about the baby. She insisted it is a boy. It was kind of an odd but funny moment. So far, zero predictions for the baby being a girl. Haha.

Belly: I love this little big baby belly!  It and the baby are rapidly growing! It still cracks me up to look down to see the interesting formations my belly takes as he/she moves. He/she usually likes to stick to one side which gives the belly a rather wop-sided appearance. On occasion, he/she will lay perfectly sideways and my belly looks just like I swallowed a dumb-bell! haha!

Sleep: Sleep is ... well, it is what it is. I'm so thankful for the ability to rest or nap during the day! Even with a nap I still crash at only 7 pm! Haha

Clothes
This baby and belly are growing fast! Maternity clothes are a necessity. I actually braved the holiday shopping madness to pick up a few new pieces. I had an offer for a $50 restaurant card with any purchase from a maternity store, and so I decided that was worth browsing the sale rack. It was well worth the holiday traffic adventure! I have a few new cute pieces and we have $50 to eat out on while traveling soon.

Movement: I've been doing so much better at incorporating the Bradley Method exercises and walking into my days. There is still plenty more room for greater discipline, but I am making progress! I know how valuable the benefits are now and will be later for the baby and I. Now that delivery is getting closer quicker, practicing healthy habits like exercising has become even more important to me. I'm rather proud of myself! It also helps that hubby has been able to rejoin me in the effort now that the busiest time at his job is over. He's even braved the freezing cold to join me on brief walks each day. Going for walks when the "feels like" temperature is in the single digits is the mark of an awesome husband and Pop-to-be!

Baby Movement- It amazes me how much this baby moves! He/she is quite an active one! He/she wiggles and kicks constantly. It's also amazing how such a little being can kick so hard sometimes! I rather wonder what he/she is doing in there! It's still incredible to feel. It's also incredible to watch! It's rather entertaining to just watch him/her moving and kicking all around my belly. Our midwife even commented on how active the baby was at our last appointment!

Food aversions: I don't think there are any anymore. Anything and everything sounds and tastes fantastic.

Food cravings: Anything! Haha, appetite has definitely kicked up recently! I'm pretty much enjoying anything and everything nowadays. My Bradley Method nutrition log is stunning some days! haha! I still have a immense love for citrus. A day without a grapefruit or something just wouldn't be complete. We checked out at the grocery on one occasion and noticed I had an entire bag of just pineapple, oranges, and grapefruit. The pineapple didn't even last more than two days! Haha! I suppose there are worse things to "crave" during pregnancy! At least citrus is a good source of vitamin C for the winter time!

What I'm excited about: I love looking down this growing baby belly and feeling him/her there! It still astonishes me that we will have a little child in only a few months. I am still just so excited to watch him/her grow and discover the person he/she will be. The weeks are going by so fast!

Midwife appointments are being scheduled at only two weeks apart now! I've continued to be impressed with the midwife team and hospital we've chosen. I'm so very grateful for a team and facility that is so supportive and respectful of our wishes! They really have been amazing thus far.

Now that we're getting much closer to the due date, I'm really feeling some urgency for getting things in order. There are a handful of sewing projects that remain (Boppy cover, changing pad, diaper bag etc). I also need to start getting together items needed for delivery or postpartum care. And, of course, we will need to make a final (well, and also first) shopping trip to get items the baby will need. Lots to do yet, but very exciting!

We're planning a trip to spend time with our extended family and friends soon, which is always a joy. I'm excited to get to be with everyone and celebrate the upcoming arrival of this little baby soon!

Only 12 more weeks to go and they're going fast!

Your baby is settling into the proper position for birth, with his head facing downward ... He's busy adding new skills such as blinking to an already impressive repertoire of tricks like coughing, sucking, hiccuping, and taking practice breaths. On occasion, he/she will lay perfectly sideways and my belly looks just like I swallowed a dumb-bell! haha!

Sleep: Sleep is ... well, it is what it is. I'm so thankful for the ability to rest or nap during the day when needed!

Clothes
This baby and belly are growing fast! Maternity clothes are a necessity, but have still been pretty low on my priority list. I did pick up a new chambray style shirt recently, and have been rather enjoying it. I now have a week's worth of pieces! haha. Excuse the repetitiveness of my attire. I do wash everything! haha!

Movement: I'm still trying to incorporate the Bradley Method exercises or walking at the gym into my daily routine. I've got a lot more improvement to do in the discipline area of exercise, but little by little it's going to happen. I know how valuable the benefits are now and will be later for the baby and I.

I'm pretty much enjoying anything and everything nowadays. I've continued to try to concentrate on nutritious options. Although, there have been momentary lapses in which hunger overrides that preference. For instance, despite having eaten dinner directly before leaving for our last Bradley class I had to stop by fast food on our way home just a few hours later. Fast food, much less a cheeseburger and milkshake, at 10pm is definitely something I would have never even considered previously. Oh, when hunger strikes. Haha.

Yesterday for lunch I requested hubby pick up a lemon-lime soda so that I could batter and fry the fish for our fish tacos instead of my usual grilled style. We joked about how that is definitely more characteristic of him than me, and therefore this baby is going to be a little David. Hahaha!

Interestingly, I haven't desired to indulge in a lot of sweets. I enjoy sweets, but I really like salty and meaty foods. Again, the baby's going the be a little David! hahah!

What I'm excited about: I love looking down this growing baby belly and feeling him/her there! It still astonishes me that we will have a little child in only a few months. I am still just so excited to watch him/her grow and discover the person he/she will be. The weeks are going by so fast!

We've receive a couple of gifts for the baby from a family member and sweet friend. Our cloth diaper collection has begun! Now to just figure out and practice how they all adjust and go on! haha!

Next week will be our last Bradley class. It's bitter sweet. While we'll be glad to not have to make the weekly drive, but I'm a little saddened to no longer have this source of encouragement and education. We've learned so much over the last twelve weeks! It's also been wonderful to have this resource/individuals with such a strong and steady can-do spirit! I'm sure we'll continue to review the material, practice the principals, and stay connected with everyone in the remaining couple of months.

Midwife appointments are being scheduled closer together! We're beginning to have labor and delivery discussions as part of each visit. Whoa! I've continued to be impressed with the midwife team and hospital we've chosen. I'm so very grateful for a team and facility that is so supportive and respectful of our wishes!

Of course, Christmas time is here! We typically spend Christmas as just our family, and then visit with extended family later. I really enjoy our little family Christmas celebrations each year. I'm also thrilled as always to get to visit with everyone afterwards  :)

this week, her eyes, which until now were developing under fused eyelids, start to open. Of course, there's not much to see in there, but if your baby spots a bright light (or hears a loud noise) near your belly, you may notice an increase in fetal activity. ... What accounts for that response? Her brain is more developed and sophisticated.-What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition

Clothes
This baby and belly are growing fast! Maternity clothes are ideal, but I have continued to try to make a couple of my non-maternity sweaters fit. I will probably wear out the few that still fit before long. I love cozy sweaters in the winter! (Too bad the vast majority of maternity clothes are thin or knit material, which doesn't do much in the winter). I'm considering doing a little online Black Friday shopping for some warmer pieces and/or coat. I have a giant coat that I've only worn once because it's so big. Well, not any longer! The zipper and velcro tabs barely close now! Oh my

Of course, that is unless I'm trying to eat because then it becomes a battle for space between food and baby. haha!  Somehow all those kicks are still hit or miss for David to feel. He's so funny in that he'll lay his hand to my belly and say, "high five!" He cracks me up!

We've finally begun reorganizing our second bedroom. It's pretty exciting to see the room cleared and ready for a new purpose! David is painting a dresser set we have and he'll make one of the surfaces a changing area. I have a handful of patterns that I'd love to sew for the baby. The list goes on, but it will be fun to accomplish.

Pregnancy Update: Week 24

Much of [baby's] weight comes from accumulating baby fat, as well as from growing organs, bones, and muscle. Those little ears of hers are getting sharper and can hear very loud sounds, from a yapping dog to a jackhammer. Also by now, that fabulous face is almost fully formed, complete with eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair. Is your baby a brunette, a blonde, or a redhead? Actually, right now her locks are white since there's no pigment yet.-What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition

Baby size:  "Your baby is about eight and a half inches long and weighs one and a half pounds, gaining steadily at a rate of six ounces per week.-What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition

Gender: We'll find out when he/she arrives in March!

Belly: I love this little baby belly! Although I was writing in my lap one day and the belly got in the way when the paper shifted resulting in a belly paper cut. From stained shirts to paper cuts, instances such as these have become are rather amusing. Haha

Sleep: Sleep is ... well, it is what it is. I'm so thankful for the ability to rest or nap during the day when needed!

Clothes
This baby and belly are growing fast! Maternity clothes are now a necessity. I tried getting away with one of my previous shirts, but it didn't quite cover sufficiently (see paper cut story above). Oh well.

I've done about as much shopping as this non-shopper can handle for the time being. Just overlook the fact that I wear the exact same seven pieces every single week. I do wash them! Haha!

Movement: I'm still trying to incorporate the Bradley Method exercises or walking at the gym into my daily routine. I've got a lot more improvement to do in the discipline area of exercise, but little by little it's going to happen. I know how valuable the benefits are now and will be later for the baby and I.

Although not pregnancy related, I'm pretty excited about the upcoming holidays. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! I'm really looking forward to spending time with family and, of course, that delicious Thanksgiving meal! I really enjoy how we've come to celebrate our Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. We've formed our own family traditions, and it will be neat for them to become even more special as our family grows.
